When a star has exhausted the hydrogen reserves in its nucleus, helium begins to fuse to carbon. This fusion generates less energy than the fusion of hydrogen to helium. The star then expands to several times its original size. As the surface is thus expanded proportionally, it cools down. The colour of the star changes to red.
